FAFSA WORKSHOP!!!! On Friday, February 28, WV GEAR UP Regional Director Mallory Carpenter and an additional GEAR UP staff member will be at LCHS to assist seniors in completing the FAFSA, PROMISE and WV Invests grant applications, and opt in to the Text 4 Success initiative. Students completing these 21st Century Scholars milestones will receive a cord to wear at graduation.

Attention Seniors! The GFWC WV Woman's Club of Hamlin Scholarship is available. Pick up an application in the counseling office.
The 24-25 Southern Scholarship is available for students planning to attend Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College in the fall. Stop by the counselor's office for an application.
ATTENTION SENIORS! The WV Promise Scholarship APPLICATION DEADLINE is March 1st, 2025. You MUST complete the FAFSA and PROMISE APPLICATION by March 1st, 2025, to be considered. You can still qualify with the SAT until June 2025 and the ACT until July 2025.

We get lots of questions about the scholarships available to our LCHS students. Not all of our students go to 4-year colleges and there are scholarships available for CTC's that pay for CERTIFICATIONS and ASSOCIATE'S DEGREES!
WV FAFSA Day has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 13! Seniors and their parents/guardians are invited to attend the workshop between 1-6 pm in the Southern WV CTC Computer Lab at LCHS. The most important financial aid application is the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. All federal financial aid programs require you to submit the FAFSA. It takes approximately 1 hour to complete the FAFSA. Both student and parent will need to have their FSA ID’s (create username and password at studentaid.gov), Social Security numbers and 2023 tax returns to complete the FAFSA.
Students who are seeking PROMISE scholarship eligibility ($5,500 per year for 4 years) must submit both the FAFSA and the PROMISE application by March 1, 2025

Friday, February 7 LCHS students are encouraged to were RED to show support for the Heart of the Diamond Foundation and heart disease awareness. There will be organization members there to snap photos for their website in the afternoon.

The first is WV FAFSA Day is Thursday, February 6! Seniors and their parents/guardians are invited to attend the WV FAFSA Day workshop anytime between 1-6 pm in the Southern WV CTC Computer Lab at LCHS. The most important financial aid application is the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. All federal financial aid programs and most programs offered by the state of West Virginia require you to submit the FAFSA. It takes approximately 1 hour to complete the FAFSA; both student and parent will need to provide Social Security numbers to complete the FAFSA. Food and refreshments will be provided courtesy of WV GEAR UP. The FAFSA is available online at studentaid.gov.
The second is about the award ceremony that will also take place Thursday February 6, during 6th and 7th periods in the auditorium for our 9th through 12th grade participants. All participants and top scorers going to regional math field day will be recognized.

As we have transitioned into the second semester and some class changes here at LCHS, we want to send some general reminders to students and parents concerning school practices and expectations.
First, All students who are dropped off by parents or drive to school should enter the building through the main entrances in front in the mornings. There should not be anyone entering the building on the Clinic or Southern wing of the building.
Students are not permitted to wear hats or other headgear in the building. The best practice is to leave those at home so there is no property damaged or lost.
Shirts that expose the entire side of the body or bare midriff are not allowed.
Next, cell phones are not permitted to be used during instructional time, during class.
Lastly, students are not permitted to sign out of the building and return unless they have a medical or other acceptable written excuse.
Parents, please help us by asking your student to adhere to these expectations. The safety of our students is always the top priority.

LCHS will host a FAFSA completion workshop for seniors and their parent/guardians on Tuesday, January 21st from 4:30-6:30 pm in the LCHS Media Center Computer Lab. The most important financial aid application is the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. We encourage parents and guardians to take advantage of this opportunity to receive assistance. You will need your Social Security number and FSA ID (account username and password) to login to StudentAid.gov and start the FAFSA form electronically.

If your child's lunch number does not contain 9-digits, please place a 0 in front of the beginning number to create a 9-digit number. Good afternoon,
WV GEAR UP will be hosting a FAFSA completion workshop for seniors and their parents/guardians on January 21 from 4:30-6:30 pm in the Media Center Computer Lab. Please share with your seniors in your classes or perhaps place on your Schoology page. I have also posted to Schoology but students probably pay more attention to your class posts.
Students can receive financial aid to attend career technical schools, training academies, community and technical colleges and 4-year colleges and universities. Students will never know what types of financial aid that they are eligible for unless they complete the FAFSA. Completing the FAFSA will allow them to receive a financial aid report detailing what they are eligible for in terms of a federal PELL grant, the WV Higher Education Grant, WV Invests Grant, etc. Submitting the FAFSA does not require them to attend postsecondary education, it just provides them with a understanding of how they could pay for the cost of their education after high school.
Thank you for helping get the information out to students. As of today, we are at 6.8% FAFSA completion rate for seniors.

Announcing a new scholarship…
WVNLA announces a newly created scholarship for rising college freshmen.
The George W. Longenecker Memorial Scholarship is available to rising freshmen accepted into the landscape architecture or horticulture programs at West Virginia University.
Recipients will receive full tuition reimbursement for four semesters while maintaining a 3.0 GPA with full credits in either the landscape architecture or horticultural programs. The scholarship will be renewable to the student each semester so long as they are in good standing with the requirements.
Applicants must have the following qualifications:
West Virginia resident
High school senior accepted to West Virginia University landscape architecture or horticulture programs OR any in-state resident student entering his or her first year of WVU Landscape Architecture or horticulture program
GPA of 3.0 or higher
Full-time student
Applicant must complete a George W Longenecker Scholarship application online or by mail. By mail, please provide the following information and submit an essay stating his or her interest in landscape architecture or ornamental horticulture and why he or she feels it is important to the state of West Virginia to develop future professionals in the nursery and landscape design industry.
If mailing an essay application, include the following information:
Name, Address, High School Attending and County, Email and Phone.

Who was George W. Longenecker?
George Longenecker dedicated a lifetime to the study and mentorship of landscape architecture. George was instrumental in developing the landscape architecture program at West Virginia University, where he was beloved by his students and fellow faculty members for his personality and knowledge of plant materials. He founded and led the effort to organize and establish the West Virginia Botanic Garden in Morgantown. For 35 years, George served as an advisor for the Pennsylvania Conservancy-sponsored summer landscape architecture internship program for the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Fallingwater in Mill Run, PA.
